The current government was created in 1962 with the adoption of Jamaica's first independent constitution the Jamaican government is modeled after the parliament of the United Kingdom, of which it was formerly a colony, although it names its legislative chambers the House of Representatives and the Senate as in the United States. Jamaica is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. The island is made up of coastal lowlands, a limestone plateau, and the Blue Mountains, a group of volcanic hills, in the east. By area it is the third largest island in the Caribbean. Jamaica is an island in the West Indies, 90 mi (145 km) south of Cuba and 100 mi (161 km) west of Haiti.
